Hi, today I’m back with a new video about Japanese religions facts (dah…), and the very charming way in which space is conceived and organized; in particular, I will chat about the dynamic between ta (the rice field), sato (the village) and yama (the mountain), domain of the supernatural powers!

Space and religion in Japan
Space and time are well renowned topic in cultural and religious anthropology; they have been studied since the dawn of this discipline, and they represent the core of a multitude of studies about foreign and esotic religious practices.
In Japan, the Yayoi period represented the first huge revolution for the archipelago, from both an economic and a cultural point of view; it is in this time that the rice agriculture was introduced here from China, and this innovation transformed the life of the Japanese people in a very drastic way.
In particular, the rice paddy offered a pattern to organize the human life: it came to represent the human world, the human ordered life. It also creates a symmetrical dimension, that of the sacred and the powerful superhuman forces, represented by the mountains…
